My Role: ExpressionEngine, Development, Design
I needed a promotional site for my acting and entertainment work. As an actor I feel it’s important to stand out from the crowd and I wanted a website that represented that. Casting Directors do look at your site and they usually see the same boring template, huge headshot with text wrapped around it. I wanted to promote myself as an actor but also document my journey, good or bad, in my work for stage and film.
To create this multifaceted site I immediately put a face to the site with a quick blurb of who I am, and several of my accomplishments and put this at the very top of the homepage.
Directly below is a featured blog. I chose only one story to have the lime light so that visitors know exactly what to read first. So as not to bury my previous posts I’ve displayed the previous 3 stories right underneath the feature to allow people to scan from left to right really quickly.
Since this is the information age it’s easy to feel bombarded with TMI on websites these days. To balance this out I created every section in modular “widgets”, with a friendly color palette, from top to bottom. The last row of each page is my “everythign else” widgets. You can click a category to show featured blogs in an organized fashion or just see what I’ve recently listened to or bookmarked on the web. These widgets are for the viewers who now know who I am and what I’m doing and it’s my way of adding an extra personal touch.
I believe that a website should be interesting from top to bottom and to further stress the importance of promotion on the web I used the footer to remind people to subscribe to my RSS as well as where they can find me elsewhere in this world wide web. If you like, you have the option to look at my photos through flickr, read my stream of thought tweets through twitter and view photos and videos I’ve enjoyed on tumblr (which I’ve also integrated into my website).
The site is built using strict compliant XHTML/CSS code and integrated into the CMS ExpressionEngine.
